Söderström continued to explain that Spotify wants to introduce the HiFi tier in a cost-effective manner and avoid a rinse-and-repeat approach that mimics what other industry players have done. The industry changed and we had to adapt. We are going to do it, but we’re going to do it in a way where it makes sense for us and for our listeners.

We announced it, but then the industry changed for a bunch of reasons. About a year later, in March 2023, Spotify's Co-President Gustav Söderström vaguely told The Verge in an unrelated interview that the HiFi tier delay was due to "industry changes" but was reluctant to give more explanations. So there it is-the delay has to do with licensing issues with artists and music labels. So I can't really announce any specific on this other than to say that we're in constant dialogue with our partners to bring this to market. So yes, I mean, many of the features that we talk about and especially that's related to music ends up into licensing. So I'll start with the question and then Paul can speak to the guidance. That is, until an interview with The Verge in 2023.Ī transcript from AlphaStreet shows how Ek revealed the reason in response to a direct question about the delay and a push for an update as follows: There have even been rumors that Spotify is testing HiFi ahead of launch, but Spotify hasn't shared any details explaining the reason for the delay. But we don’t have timing details to share yet. We feel the same, and we’re excited to deliver a Spotify HiFi experience to Premium users in the future. We know that HiFi quality audio is important to you. On January 7, 2022, a moderator from the company responded with an update that gives no actual information on when the tier may become available: Users have expressed frustration over the delay online, including on the Spotify Community site.

Spotify hasn't shared any details about a launch date or even a period in which you can expect it. Since then, everyone has been speculating why Spotify HiFi had been delayed and when the streaming service would make this tier available.

Spotify talked up this tier, promising a great experience with CD-quality, lossless audio streaming. In February 2021, Spotify announced that it would be releasing a HiFi tier, but we're yet to see (or rather, hear) it.
